HEARTLAND GALLERY’S 25TH ANNIVERSARY

1984 – 2009

2009 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the formal opening of Heartland Gallery by George and Annamae Losch.  The original gallery was in their home which was located along the Cocolamus Creek in rural Juniata County.  The gallery then moved to its existing location, a two hundred year old stone building in Thompsontown which had been used as a tavern, post office, stagecoach stop, and later, as a private residence and apartments.  After extensive renovations to the building, the gallery opened its doors at this new location in November, 1987.

As everyone who has ever visited Heartland can verify, the new gallery was a fitting venue to show the fruits of George’s artistic talent.  The name Heartland comes from a very popular series of paintings George did in 1984.  It was known as the Heartland Series and was so successful that he named the gallery after it.

As George’s talent continued to be refined, he won many awards and honors for his art.  Eventually the demand for his work became too great to be fulfilled solely through original work, and it was determined that lithograph prints would be made.  To date, over fifty of George’s originals have been released in limited-edition prints.  The latest is ‘Wings Over The Susquehanna’.

In 2004, George succumbed to the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease.  The legacy of his artistic talent continues to live on today through the hundreds of originals and thousands of prints that grace the walls of many homes and businesses throughout the local area, the state, and the nation.  He continues to be Heartland’s most popular artist.

Annamae Losch had utilized her administrative and sales skills to handle those substantial responsibilities for the gallery, while raising six kids.  Her abilities were invaluable to the successful building of the business over the years.  She was dedicated to the promotion of George’s work and kept the business going despite his illness and subsequent death.  The success of the gallery became a major focal point in her life.  Her retirement in August of 2008 was well-deserved.

Custom framing for original art, prints and other artifacts and treasures has been offered since the beginning.  George and Annamae’s son, George, has been providing this ‘in-house’ service for over twenty years through his business, Losch Custom Framing.  He has developed a reputation for being a great craftsman.  His color eye is such that many clients rely on George to pick their matte colors on his own.

The gallery now features artwork from more than fifty artists.  The list of artists represents those of local Pennsylvania fame (Christ, Paluh, Marthouse, Mark-Finberg, etc) as well as those of national renown (Redlin, Olsen, Daly, Mrs. B, Bateman, Brenders, Sieve, etc.).  The newest additions to the gallery are the Bonus Room and the Penn State Room.  The Bonus Room has items which are discounted up to 40%.  The Penn State Room is filled with prints featuring views of campus and State College landmarks.  Various PSU gift items (hats, mugs, license plates, earrings, etc.) are also available.

Although the challenges facing all small, rural businesses are great, we are hopeful that Heartland will continue to provide its customers with artwork, framing and more, for many years to come. Thank you for your loyal support !

Sincerely,

John & Lucy Beaver, Proprietors
